President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. called on Filipinos to reflect on the lessons of the nation’s history and remain committed to protecting democracy, preserving freedom, and strengthening national unity as the country commemorates Ninoy Aquino Day.
In his message marking the occasion, Marcos emphasized the importance of remembering the sacrifices of those who contributed to the Philippines’ democratic journey. He said the legacy of the late Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. should inspire Filipinos to remain firm in their convictions, actively participate in national affairs, and help build a stronger and more democratic society.
“Ninoy Aquino Day, therefore, invites us to acknowledge the past and draw from it the resolve needed to safeguard freedom, strengthen our institutions, and deepen national unity,” Marcos said.
The President noted that while the challenges confronting Philippine democracy have evolved over the years, the responsibility of every Filipino to protect democratic principles remains just as important. He urged citizens to learn from the country’s history and use those lessons to promote unity, respect democratic institutions, and protect the freedoms enjoyed by future generations.
“The challenges facing our democracy may have changed over time, but our shared responsibility to reinforce it remains,” he added.
Ninoy Aquino Day serves as an annual reminder of the struggle for democracy and the sacrifices made during a critical period in Philippine history. The commemoration honors Aquino, whose assassination on August 21, 1983, became a defining moment in the country’s political history and contributed to growing calls for democratic change.
As Filipinos mark the occasion, Marcos encouraged the nation to look beyond the events of the past and recognize the continuing importance of defending democratic values. He stressed that freedom, national unity, and strong institutions require the participation and commitment of citizens, particularly as the country faces new challenges in a changing political and social environment.
The President’s message ultimately called on Filipinos to preserve the lessons of history, protect democratic freedoms, and work together toward a more united and resilient Philippines.
