The Lopez family which owns ABS-CBN has reportedly stopped contributing to Vice President Leni Robredo’s campaign due to her failure to overtake Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as the frontrunner in pre-election surveys, Arroyo-era Cabinet Secretary Rigoberto Tiglao said.
In his April 6 column for the Manila Times, Tiglao cited the latest Laylo Research survey results as the reason for the dwindling donations to Robredo’s campaign.
The Laylo survey conducted from March 15 to 22 showed voter preference for Robredo at 17 to 21 percent, while Marcos’ lead was at 59 to 63 percent.
“As a result, potential funders, even the stridently anti-Marcos elites like the Lopez clan and the leftist wife of a Hong Kong-based tycoon have decided to stop funding the loser’s campaign,” Tiglao said.
With the slowdown in campaign contributions, Tiglao said several of Robredo’s campaign headquarters have been shut down and the salaries of staff were unpaid.
“No wonder, the Pink Party in the past week has been desperately calling for ‘volunteers’— with little success,” he said.
